Jared's Positions on Key Issues

Economy

High

Jared Huffman supports investments in transportation infrastructure, research and development, clean energy, and education to create jobs. He has supported Democratic budget proposals and legislation like the CARES Act, American Rescue Plan Act, Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Law, and Inflation Reduction Act to bolster economic recovery, support small businesses, and fund community projects.

“I would have voted in favor of the other two bills on their own, but I couldn’t vote for this added defense package. However, I’m proud I was able to negotiate to include funding for some important community projects in the final bill. Those will have direct benefits for the people we represent, which is where our focus should be,” Huffman, January 22, 2026.

Immigration

High

Jared Huffman advocates for comprehensive immigration reform, citing its potential to boost the economy and create jobs. He supports DREAMers, believing they deserve a path to citizenship, and criticized the termination of the DACA program. Huffman voted against the Department of Homeland Security funding bill on February 20, 2024, stating his opposition to a "blank check for ICE" without adequate oversight. He also supported the NO BAN Act and improving humanitarian standards at the border.

I support DREAMers. They have been raised here, attend our schools, graduate from our universities, and serve in our military. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program protected these young people. They deserve to have a chance to earn their way to citizenship, and former President Trump’s decision to terminate DACA was a cruel, broken promise. - Jared Huffman, on huffman.house.gov/policy-issues/immigration

Healthcare

Medium

Jared Huffman is a cosponsor of the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, advocating for a universal, single-payer healthcare system to expand access and affordability, citing Medicare as a successful model. He has also championed increasing access to healthcare services in rural areas, securing federal grants for local health centers and voting to strengthen Medicare. He opposes policies that would reduce healthcare access and increase premiums for Californians.

Climate & Energy

High

Jared Huffman champions climate action, co-sponsoring the Green New Deal resolution and leading efforts to protect public lands through legislation like the Northwest California Wilderness, Recreation, and Working Forests Act. He has consistently voted pro-environment, opposed fossil fuel exploration off the California coast and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and introduced the Polar Bear Cub Survival Act. He condemned Trump's withdrawal from international climate agreements and opposed appropriations that cut renewable energy programs and climate research.

Withdrawing from these international clean energy and environmental programs will be remembered as one of the greatest acts of economic self-sabotage in American history. Our children and grandchildren will ask why we sacrificed good-paying jobs and the industries of tomorrow to protect the polluters of the past — and why we didn’t act when we had the chance." (Jared Huffman, Ranking Member Huffman Statement on Trump’s Withdrawal from International Climate Agreements, January 07, 2026)

Abortion & Reproductive Rights

High

Jared Huffman supports the right to make individual reproductive choices and opposes the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, viewing abortions as health care. In July 2022, he voted for the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act, which protects the right to travel for care, and the Women’s Health Protection Act, which aims to codify abortion rights into federal law. He is committed to protecting abortion providers and restoring reproductive health care access.

I also support a the right to make one’s own reproductive choices and deeply oppose the extreme, out of touch, right-wing Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the constitutional right to abortion – tearing apart decades of legal precedent. This ruling doesn’t change the fact that abortions are health care, and countless people will still need to access it. In California, our rights are still protected – and we will continue to protect and expand access to abortion, so no one is denied the care they need. I will keep fighting in Washington to protect abortion providers, restore the right to reproductive health care, and safeguard the many other rights won based on Roe v. Wade that are now in danger under this abhorrent Supreme Court.

Foreign Policy

High

Representative Jared Huffman has opposed several defense appropriations bills, including voting against the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act and a three-bill minibus package, citing concerns about excessive spending and lack of oversight. He also voted against multiple bills aiming to expand arms funding for Israel, referencing humanitarian concerns. Huffman supports smart reductions in defense spending, updating nuclear weapons programs, and closing Guantanamo Bay.

“The Trump administration is completely off the rails – launching ruthless attacks in the Caribbean, escalating military tensions in Venezuela, and selling out Ukraine. They’re running amok, and Congressional Republicans are doing nothing to rein them in. Our defense budget is meant to boost military readiness, benefit service members, and help protect our national security – not write a blank check to the Trump administration to wreak any havoc they please. But that’s exactly what the NDAA does, which is why I could not vote in good conscience to advance this bill,” said Rep. Huffman. (Rep. Jared Huffman, press release on NDAA, December 10, 2025)

Education

Medium

Representative Jared Huffman emphasizes that America's future relies on robust investment in education, including proper funding and resources. He has introduced the bipartisan IDEA Full Funding Act every Congress to ensure federal commitment to special education. Huffman also advocates for the IDEA High Cost Pool Funding Act and supports priorities such as environmental education and high-speed broadband infrastructure.
