Mikie's Positions on Key Issues

Economy

High

Mikie Sherrill supports economic growth through investments in education and job training, particularly in STEM fields and through partnerships between universities, community colleges, and local employers. She advocates for building on New Jersey's strengths in healthcare and biotechnology to attract technology and clean energy jobs. As governor, she signed executive orders to freeze utility rates and streamline permitting to lower costs and ease business operations, a stance supported by the NEW JOBS PAC.

In order to create more good-paying jobs and maintain the quality of life we have worked so hard for, Congress needs to start working for us. The health of our economy cannot be a partisan issue. Working across party lines, [...] Invest in education and job training. A good job comes from a good education, and good schools attract new businesses. I want to work with parents and our local schools to invest in science, technology, engineering, math, and civics.

Immigration

High

Mikie Sherrill vetoed immigrant rights bills, expressing concern that codifying such legislation could invite new court challenges. She has also been hesitant to fully commit to New Jersey's Immigrant Trust Directive, seeking clarification despite supporting much of it. Conversely, Sherrill opposes expanding immigration detention and issued an executive order to protect against ICE raids on state property, stating her commitment to keeping New Jerseyans safe and upholding constitutional rights.

“I am focused on keeping people safe here,” Sherrill told reporters Nov. 5, the day after her election victory, when asked about the policy. “I’m committed to making sure people feel safe,” she said. “That is what I’m going to do as governor.”

Healthcare

High

Mikie Sherrill advocates for affordable healthcare, aiming to cap prescription drug costs, expand coverage, protect pre-existing conditions, and lower prices by requiring transparency and justification for premium increases. As governor, she plans to protect public employee health plans, lower premiums, and ensure access to doctors, especially for children. She supports codifying abortion rights and expanding access to reproductive health services, contraception, and IVF.

“Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. continue to put public health and our kids' lives at risk by taking advice from social media. Overturning recommendations for children and newborns that have prevented some of the worst and most fatal childhood diseases is dangerous.  I applaud the Executive Directive issued by the New Jersey Department of Health protecting the birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine. As governor, I will work to ensure parents have continued access to science-based information and critical vaccines and join with our public health officials, medical professionals, and the Northeast Public Health Collaborative to keep our children safe and healthy.” - Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill, Statement on The Federal Government Ending the Hepatitis B Vaccine Recommendation for Newborns, 2025-12-08

Climate & Energy

High

Mikie Sherrill supports expanding new energy generation from solar, nuclear, and battery storage projects, aiming to reduce utility costs and carbon emissions. She plans to invest in mass transit to decrease car usage and develop housing plans to prevent sprawl, which could worsen flooding and impact wildlife. She earned a 93% score from the League of Conservation Voters in 2024 and a 97% lifetime score.

I am focused on bringing down utility costs and reducing carbon emissions in our communities.Central to both of these goals is a rapid expansion in new energy generation from solar, nuclear, and battery storage projects. Solar is the fastest power source to build and the cheapest nationwide, and it also will help us to clean up the air that everyone in New Jersey breathes. That’s why on Day One, I’ll aggressively expand our energy infrastructure and generation capacity by cutting through red tape to build and fast track new solar, nuclear, and battery storage projects – and force PJM to connect them to the grid. Additionally, I will invest more into our mass transit systems – like NJ TRANSIT, the PATH system, and bus rapid transit – so that we can get more cars off the road, reducing [...] I will also focus on developing a smart and comprehensive plan for housing development that prevents sprawl and overdevelopment, which could exacerbate flooding and climate change while destroying wildlife habitats. (Mikie Sherrill, written response to South Jersey Climate News, November 4, 2025)

Abortion & Reproductive Rights

High

Mikie Sherrill strongly supports abortion rights, having voted twice for the Women’s Health Protection Act. She has pledged to enshrine abortion rights in the New Jersey constitution, safeguard access to mifepristone, and strengthen state shield laws for healthcare providers. Sherrill views access to reproductive healthcare as a fundamental right essential to women's autonomy and health, and she co-led efforts to restore federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

I’m a Navy veteran committed to defending our rights and freedoms in New Jersey by enshrining the right to an abortion in our state constitution, stockpiling the abortion pill mifepristone, and strengthening state shield laws for our healthcare providers.” (Mikie Sherrill, Reproductive Freedom for All)

Foreign Policy

High

Mikie Sherrill supports a robust military presence and comprehensive missile defense to address threats from North Korea and Iran, citing concerns about their nuclear programs and destabilizing activities. She voted in favor of the Additional Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2022, which provided $40 billion in aid to Ukraine. She also supported the CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen U.S. capacity in critical sectors and manage U.S.-China competition.

We must work hard to contain threats posed by North Korea and Iran. Iran’s despicable human rights record, ballistic missile program, and support for terrorist groups destabilize the Middle East and threaten the security of Israel. However, we cannot monitor Iran’s nuclear program or improve upon the nuclear agreement without a seat at the table. We should also engage in diplomacy with North Korea, but approach the situation with clear eyes. North Korea has broken promises to denuclearize in the past, and unless we extract real concessions, their nuclear program presents a threat. For that reason I support a robust military presence in the region and a comprehensive missile defense program to defend America, our allies, and our troops abroad. (Mikie Sherrill, Ballotpedia)

Education

High

Mikie Sherrill supports fully funding public schools, advocating for modernizing the funding formula to stabilize state aid and address special education costs. She plans to expand the Interdistrict Public School Choice Program to tackle school segregation and supports merging some school districts. Additionally, she aims to invest in high-impact tutoring, early literacy, and mental health services in schools to improve student outcomes.

“New Jersey has an important role to play celebrating the nation’s 250th and I look forward to embracing that opportunity as governor. It’s clear, however, that Sec. McMahon’s so-called ‘History Rocks!’ visit does not intend to celebrate the values of our country and Constitution; instead, it politicizes New Jersey public schools with a mandatory school assembly sponsored by far-right organizations that promote an extreme MAGA agenda. It is entirely inappropriate, violates parents’ rights, and our kids deserve better. At a minimum, the Secretary of Education should prioritize ensuring that all of our kids get a great education, not defunding public schools, robbing New Jerseyans of our tax dollars, and jeopardizing our children’s future.” - Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill, Statement on Secretary of Education’s Partisan Visit to New Jersey, December 5, 2025

Gun Policy

High

Mikie Sherrill supports gun control, having advocated for expanding background checks, banning bump stocks, and promoting safe firearm storage while in Congress. She also played a role in passing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Sherrill is endorsed by gun safety groups like Giffords PAC and Brady PAC, stating that strong gun laws protect citizens and reduce gun violence, which contributes to New Jersey's low firearm death rates.

“Allowing untrained and unchecked individuals to carry concealed firearms in New Jersey is unconscionable,” said Sherrill in 2017.
